Bunion Treatment Q&A

What is bunion treatment?

Bunion treatment refers to several procedures that realign the bones at the front of your foot. Specifically, they relieve pain caused by bunions –– bony growths that develop on the outer edge at the base of your big toe joint.

Who can benefit from bunion treatment?

Consider bunion treatment at Align Foot & Ankle Center if you have any of the following symptoms:

  • A swollen bump on the outside edge of your big toe
  • Soreness or redness around your big toe
  • Numbness
  • Difficulty moving your big toe

As the bunion grows, you might also have problems wearing certain types of shoes.

When should I see a podiatrist for bunion treatment?

Make an appointment at Align Foot & Ankle Center for bunion treatment if you have a visible bump on the outside edge of the joint at the base of your big toe. That’s especially true if the growth is painful or keeps you from wearing your favorite shoes.

How are bunions diagnosed?

To diagnose a bunion, the team at Align Foot & Ankle Center asks about your symptoms and completes an exam. They look at your big toe joint for bruising and redness and carefully move your toe from side to side, testing its range of motion. They also order X-rays to assess the alignment of the bones at the front of your foot.

What does bunion treatment involve?

At Align Foot & Ankle Center, the team offers several types of minimally invasive treatment for bunions. They might recommend:

Lapiplasty® 3D bunion correction

Lapiplasty 3D bunion correction is a minimally invasive procedure that uses patented technology to realign the bones at the front of your foot.

Treatment occurs during a short visit to the local hospital and doesn't require an overnight stay and healing begins right away. Most people can bear weight on the treated foot immediately after surgery, much quicker than with traditional bunion treatments.

Paragon 28 Phantom® Small Bone Intramedullary Nail

The Phantom small bone intramedullary nail is an implantable medical device that helps hold your big toe joint (and surrounding bones) in the proper position.

During treatment, your provider uses special tools to remove excess bone and cartilage. Then, they insert the Phantom small bone intramedullary nail into the open space. The nail allows your bones and joints to function normally, relieving pain and restoring your mobility. The procedure takes less than an hour and doesn’t require an overnight hospital stay.

MIS (minimally invasive surgery) Bunionectomy

This is yet another option to fix our bunions with much smaller incisions than the traditional way. During treatment, your provider uses small stab incisions to both make cuts to the bone to realign them and placing screws to hold the correction. The procedure is done in an outpatient setting at the local hospital or surgery center.
